Bow DownThere was a magical moment in the creation of this image. When I was a kid, my father had offered us 25 cents (not nothing then) if we could catch a dragonfly so that he could then photograph it. We never did, but one day, many years later, I’m sitting in my backyard taking photos and I see a dragonfly darting about. And the idea suddenly occurred to me, grab a stick, set your camera focus on it, and then wait. I did, and incredibly (it hasn’t happened since), the insect landed on the stick and I got the shot. Focus could be better, but I don’t mind it so much. My mother loved dragonflies. Our boat was named Dragonfly - with its named painted on the boat’s bow by my mother.
Signal StrengthSo this is a double insertion - is that cheating? I just think it applied both as an exhibition of religious faith and influence, vs as a metaphor for something with energy, with power.
Celebrating Santa's Booties
Prayer SpaceIn 2013, my friend Mark Heller and I signed up for a 10 day trip to China. I was intent on capturing loads of material for my footage company, but I also avidly took loads of stills, as well. Pretty early on, we were plunked down in a prayer area, and free to roam around as we wished. I suddenly realized how seriously some of the residents of the area took the site and what they were doing there. Wishes floating in smoke. I played with this a little, but it very much felt like a spiritual experience.
